Transfarm – converting the flak tower in Augarten in Vienna to an aquaponic-system
Can the future needs in production buildings be redefined? Is it possible to transform existing buildings in the city into systems where people and agricultural land exist in harmony?

In recent decades, agriculture has constantly been one of the main themes of territorial development. We have long been concerned about the growing population on the earth and the difficulties that this could bring. One of the solutions that technologies and spatial concepts offer to a possible agricultural and food crisis are the aquaponic facilities. This diploma thesis deals with the idea of producing food in the middle of the city using such a facility. The desire is to take an existing building in Vienna and convert it to future-proof aquaponics. In the process, the topics of greenhouses, vertical farming and waste-to-resource systems are explored. The flak tower in Augarten is an interesting object for this project. Namely because “transformation” is a key word in this work. On the one hand, this dark symbol from Viennese history is transformed into a possibility for the future, on the other hand, it shows how small changes gradually transform the way you see and think about agriculture.
